Witness Tampering
Sam Bankman-Fried is lounging in his parents’ house instead of being in jail thanks to a $250 million bail. Thinking he could get away he allegedly engaged in witness tampering. The attorneys reported that he contacted several individuals who might provide incriminating evidence to the authorities about him. At the time he claimed that he only wanted to reconnect with his co-workers and sort some things out between them whatever that might mean. Of course the prosecutors did not fall for the claim of wanting to revive lost friendship and asked the judge to impose stricter bail conditions on the culprit.
And Other Dirty Tricks
One might think that after this incident SBF would have known better than to continue with his . After he was banned from using certain encrypted messaging platforms, the disgraced former FTX CEO used a virtual private network (VPN) to contact former colleagues. Prosecutors discovered this workaround and asked Judge Kaplan to ban him from using VPN. The judge agreed to this, but he added that it is naive to think that SBF won’t keep trying to contact people on the outside as he is now living with his parents and both possess several devices with Internet connection.
Judge Kaplan Is Starting To Lose Patience
SBF’s attorney claimed that his defendant only used VPN to watch the Super Bowl. The statement is ridiculous at best as the Super Bowl can be viewed for free on several channels most of which are probably available in SBF’s parents’ house as well. His parents are both well-renowned professors of Stanford University. However, it seems that they failed to talk some sense into their son, as it appears that he does not understand the seriousness of his situation. Judge Kaplan is starting to lose his patience toward SBF who continues to look for loopholes in the restrictions imposed on him. At the last hearing Judge Kaplan noted that even though they gathered to discuss other issues, the meeting could easily end with revoking SBF’s bail. That would launch the ex-CEO right into jail from the cozy multi million dollar home of his parents.
