Anyone who’s followed the crypto scene will tell you that decisions from world leaders and regulators can cripple or strengthen it overnight. As crypto has become more prominent on the world stage, investors are constantly pushing for more pro-crypto leaders to emerge.

Luckily for the crypto scene in Canada, this seems to be coming true. Following current Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s announcement of his resignation, many feel convinced that conservative leader Pierre Poilievre will be the next leader of the country. Notably, Poilievre has pushed for better crypto regulation and innovation in the past, though not all of his views might land with stakeholders.

The Need For Crypto Leadership

A country like Canada would benefit immensely from a leader that supports the crypto space. Places like Malta and several other countries in Europe that have been intentional about courting the crypto space have reaped the benefits and Canada can do the same.

While its adoption numbers are not quite as high as the US, it has seen a healthy population of people use crypto for investments and spending. Notably, the country has several ETFs that were approved before those in the US. In terms of spending, crypto has been used considerably for things like gambling. Betting laws in Canada vary from one province to the other but where it is legal, crypto is developing a bigger presence. As crypto expert Caroline says, are more of the norm these days, generating millions in taxes for different countries.

If Canada is going to reap the benefits of the crypto/blockchain boom, it will need a leader who believes in the space and Poilievre appears to fit the bill.

All About Poilievre

Poilievre first came on the crypto sector’s radar during a 2022 campaign event where he said that making Canada a blockchain hub was a priority for him. After years of the sector being ignored by the political elite, this was a welcome change.

It is even more relevant in 2025 as incoming US president both during and after the elections. Should Poilievre become the Prime Minister, North America could see an influx of pro-crypto laws. One statement from Poilievre that has ruffled some feathers was his saying that he would not back the creation of a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC).

This mirrors the same sentiment shared by Trump which suggests that strengthening local currency needs to be a priority and a CBDC does not fit into this. Some crypto lovers support the idea of a CBDC and believe that it will only increase adoption across the board. Others are not so convinced and believe that CBDCs take away resources and attention from others.

Either way, it is encouraging to see that world leaders consider the digital asset space to be important enough to not just comment on but have as a part of their policy. Now, only time will tell if Poilievre does become the Canadian Prime Minister and what that will mean for the crypto space.
